When I try to access a file using Windows Explorer, the application hangs and then closes. A message box pops up asking if I want to send the error message to Microsoft. Event Viewer displays the following error messages each time this happens: Event Id 1000: Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2600.0, faulting module msvcrt.dll, version 7.0.2600.0, fault address 0x00033dc0. Event Id 1001: Fault bucket 02369031. Source: Winlogon; Event Id 1002: The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted. I've used to McAfee Virus Scan, Spybot, and Adaware. They have not solved my problem. I am able to use Windows Explorer in Safe Mode with no errors. I'm running Windows XP. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had the EXACT same problem. After a lot of trial and error work, I discovered it to be the new spybot S&D. I did a complete reinstall and all was fine until I did a scan with the new spybot S&D. The problems then started again. It somehow interfers with explorer operations. You will have to reinstall.... AND GET RID OF THAT STINKIN SPYBOT! Use adaware only.

I can not believe it's Spybot S&D causing this problem. I used that and Ad-Aware every time I log off the internet and have yet to have any bad experinces with either one. You have to go in to the spybot setup and tune it to what you want it to do. Otherwise yes it's a bit heavy handed in what it does. Ad-aware is out of the box ready to rock. Just keep both of them updated often as possible.
Oh my I just remembered, if you downloaded the "tea timer" that will give you some grief with your IE. Uninstall spybot and download it again. When you download the updates do not check the "tea timer".
Also let me suggest you get crap cleaner. Here is another fine program that does what it says it will do. Turn on all the functions and run the whole thing several times untill it doesn't fine anything any more. You will ba surprised at what and how much "crap" it finds. www.ccleaner.com
It's free.I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

I am sorry for the typos at the end there. What ya want at 2:30 am? lol
You also might try running > sfc /scannow and see if it repairs the IE. If still no joy the do a restore to a time when it was working ok. then do as I suggested about spybot. I hope this helps.I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

have you installed sp2? do you have spysweeper installed? if so i think this causes the shell error in explorer cos si was getting those errors and after uninstalling spy sweeper everything is back to normal.
goodluck

Believe me.... it's Spybot. I know at least a dozen other people that have been through this. It seems to affect only certain computers. I'm still trying to figureout why some machines and not others but I think it has something to do with the new 'immunize' tab.
Go to download.com and read some of the user ratings and comments. It used to be that spybot got nothing but praise, but since the new upgrade, there is a much larger population screaming about mucked up machines.
Spybot is no longer reliable, get rid of it!

Thanks for everyone's suggestions!!! Here is what worked. I tracked down the start of the problem. It begin after I installed Java on my machine. However, uninstalling Java didn't solve the issue.
Crap Cleaner found a TON of left over .jar files and other goodies that Java included in its installation. One of the files must of overwritten the .dll in question. After running scannow with my XP CD, I can navigate using explorer.
THANKS AGAIN!!!!
