If I open windows file explorer or use the run command, I get the the "Windows Explorer has crashed and will now close message". This has only started occuring constantly in the last week or so, before that it was just ever so often. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Alright, goto control panel and then goto install/uninstall programs, then click on Internet Explore then u should come with an option of repair...
If you can not doing anything you will have to re-install XP...

are you talking IE, or actually window's explore? what does the error message say exactly? and can you explore from my computer? ~smiles~

I am having similar problems, I wonder if you may be able to help. Anytime I do anything from the start button I get the following Error message, and it restarts windows explorer and nothing else. I can be running a program and it only restarts my desk top...so it seems. Here is what I get:
windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Error signature
AppName:explorer.exe AppVer: 6.02600.0 ModName; unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset 100122c6The following files will be included in this error report:
C:\DOCOUME~1\DMF\LOCALS~1\Temp|WER20.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txtI have a Sony Vaio running a preinstalled windows XP. Please let me know if there is anything I can do aside from a system restore.

Its Windows explorer
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2600.0 ModName: user32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.0 Offset: 000045fc

try going to start, run, type cmd, and then in the next window, type sfc /scannow. this will run a scan on the system files, and repair any corrupted system files, which explorer.exe is part of. otherwise, try typing in that same window, sfc /revert. this will revert the system files to the way they were when window's was first installed. i have tried the revert once on an XP machine, but never the second, so i am not sure of the screens, or anything, but i assume they are very user friendly and will tell you exactly what to do. ~smiles~ let me know if this helps, the only other thing i can say, try installing window's over itself, but back up your documents and favorittes, those will be lost. and if all else fails, do a clean install, run the debug command from dos, you have to boot to a bootable floppy or cd, then run through your window's xp cd, create the partition, format it, and reinstall. then reinstall any device drivers that might need to be installed, and go from there. lot's of work with that. ~smiles~
