Comment: My daughter turned her computer off and now when it starts up she gets the following message: ... windows did not start successfully a recent hardware or software change might have caused this. It gives the option of restarting in safe mode, safe mode w\ networking, safe mode w\command prompt & last know good configuration. None of these options work they all shut down and restart the computer and bring you back to this same screen. Any idea on how to get the system back up and running? Chillepepa

Reply: (edit)To do a backup, go to start>>all programs>>accessories>>system tools>>backup I'm not sure about trying to run the computer but I think you have to press F8.

Reply: (edit)No, back up meaning restarted and working. I can't get to the desk top/start menu screen. We have tried all of the F keys and nothing happens. Thanks for your suggestions though Chillepepa

Reply: (edit)if you have a windows xp cdrom, boot from cd, choose repair installation. Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

Reply: (edit)I don't have a CD. The D drive is dedicated to recovery. If that makes sense. I just need to figure out how to get it to read the D drive? I think I can make a recovery disc off of her sisters computer since they are the same. Thanks, Chillepepa
