Recently, while running SysInternal and F-Secure scans for root kits, I began getting positive hits. Although it's no guarantee against infection, my surfing habits are very conservative, so I was rather surprised by these results.
It then occured to me that I'd installed Windows Defender (Beta) a couple of weeks before the scans. Out of curiosity, I uninstalled WD and re-ran the scans. No hits!
I'm not saying that WD contains or has installed a root kit. It's more likely that the scanners mistook something in WD's code for a root kit, generating false positives.
Thought I'd pass this along, in case someone else has had the same experience.

find out who's the manufacturer of 'windows defender' ... you won't be surprised any longer :-)
Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

It appears that your PC may have had rootkit that WD detected and quarantined rather than purged. By uninstalling WD the uninstallation process took along with it the quarantined files.
