I get this message every time I try and view the contents of a cd in either my DVD-rom drive, or my Hp writer - "Windows cannot read from this disk. It might be corrupted, or it could be using a format not compatible with windows." I have read all over the internet trying to find the SIMPLE or NO BRAIN solution, and nothing I have ever tried is working. I cannot find any easy way out of this, and every other forum gives no answer to the problem. The 2 drives have worked for years...so I think it's something in my registry, or maybe a bug...if anyone has any ideas...they would be greatly appreciated.

have you tried removing the devices in the device manager, rebooting, see if windows will load properly and/or correct the problem??

you say the drives have worked for years?? how many?? i think the drives have taken a power surge, went south. try them in another system, if you can. might be time to replace with the newer technology anyway

The computer I'm on is a 98 with a DVD-Rom drive...its worked since now...the other drive is an HP 9100 writer which I've had since about 2 years ago...both have worked fine and I can still burn with the writer..I just can't view files in explorer, or install anything on them.

I have exactly the same problem, a dvd drive and a cdrw drive exhibiting the same problems. I have tried all the above fixes plus hacking the registry as rec. on the ms site. Does the cdr you write work ok on any other pc? It does with me. Strangely, if you write a cd with the cdrw drive and then reinsert it into that drive it appears to read it but in windows explorer it appears to be empty. Inserting that (or any other disk) into the dvd drive gives the "cannot read from this disk" error. I have also tried physically disconnecting the drives as well to no avail. I fear nuke from orbit and reinstall windows is now the only answer.
