had this prob myself as part of an ongoing spiral of system hangs and crashes. the easy way to get around the issue of desktop icons saved files etc. is to explore My Computer and there should be two folders with your name on it,one has bugger all in it (d/loads,pics and so on),and the other has the lot so just cut the old profile and paste it to the new Et Voila back to normal cosmetically at least as i have no idea whether specific settings are restored (an easy way to test is set your screen res way different from the norm restart then cut an paste and restart again ye never ken it might work?)
good luck
btw this was one of yhe first things to go "tits up" when my sys started crashing.
