Specs: Windows XP
My windows screen is black (not normal blue) but all the icons show up. But, it has a huge red criss cross pattern (almost like a crossword puzzle) that takes up the entire middle of the screen. What is this all about? Is this computer on its last leg?

Just a thought, but do you have set your desktop background to use one of the small pictures that are supposed to be tiled, but you've set it to fill the screen? To check, right-click a blank area of the desktop, choose 'properties' and then click the 'desktop' tab. Either choose a different background or set the current one you have to 'tile'.
