Comment:

I just discovered today that I can no longer open my Windows Address Book. When clicking on my Desktop shortcut, I get the message: "The Address Book file has been locked by another application. Please close the other application and try again later." I have no idea what the other application could be or why this began out of the clear blue. When I close all programs, I still get the same message.

So I can only imagine it must be some background program running. I would greatly appreciate any insight and help with this. Is the mysterious application something that might be listed under the "Processes" tab of Window's Task Manager? If so which one, and how would I get it to never start running and creating this problem anytime in the future? Thanks in advance for any advice.

No I have not tried going into safe mode with networking. Actually not sure what that means. If you can instruct how, I will try. Also, please explain what that will indicate.

tap the f8 key continuously on reboot to go into safe mode.
Click on safe mode with networking. Then click on the operating system that comes up.

Then try opening your address book to see if you get the same message.

Safe mode with networking means you can still get online and nothing will be running in the background.

XpUser4Real,

Thanks for the second post with the link to Microsoft support regarding this issue. What I read makes sense and I am in the process of finding the .wab file to resolve it.

Alas, the article said to uncheck the "Read only" box in Properties of the file. Unfortunately, it was already unchecked as it turns out. So still at the same place.

Ok XpUser4Real,

Got it solved. The confusion is that there is more than one instance of the Address Book. One in the Outlook express folder (which the article was referring to). That was unchecked. But then discovered another instance in Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Microsoft\address book. There two related files both checked. Unchecked them and it worked.
Thanks for your Help!!
