Hello I have this problem that is making me have gray hairs. I have install xp on C:\ and then install windows 98 on D:\ all on one hard disk but has two partition.At first there would not be a dual boot menu and it would only boot up in 98 but then i used the xp cd to repair my boot. Then i got a dual boot menu but it would only boot in xp not 98 as well. but when i tried to boot in 98 it would say "I/O error accessing boot sector file multi(0)disk(0)partition(1) \Bootsect.dos. Then i checked my boot.ini file and it said this:
[Boot Loader]
timeout=30
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
D:\="Microsoft Windows 98"
So i try to fix my boot.ini file to this:[Boot Loader]
timeout=30
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows="Microsoft Windows 98" /fastdetect And then i got this message "Windows Root>\system 32\hal.dll. not installed or is corrupt.Xp boot up fine but when i tried to boot in win 98 it says that. How can i fix this problem. I know that most people reconmmend
to install 98 first the xp but i want xp first then 98. I know i am close but need your help pls reply i would greatly be appreicated thankyou.combat_monk

Hi
I don't know too much about this but am going to attempt a dual boot myself with 98 and XP. Try using a dual boot manager from here:-
http://www.osloader.com/index.htm
Don't know if it'll help you but it might be worth a try.

Normally, you want to install XP last so it
will handle the boot process correctly. It
works just fine for me with Win2000 and WinXP.Lawrence

How to prepare to Upgrade Windows98 and Windows ME to Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q316639

Clear the contents of your boot.ini file and add the following in their place:
[Boot Loader]
timeout=30
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98"
This will get it working.
