Hello, I went in to add/remove programs and I have about 14 window xp hot fix items, why are they there and is it safe to remove them?

No, leave them there. Remove them and you remove the hotfix.

If and when you update to SP2, the post SP1 hotfixes will disappear from your Add/Remove programs.
