Had a problem with my XP Home Edition. Boots up, but no icon shows up on the desktop. tried looking for the problem over the web, to no avail. Decided to reinstall Xp Home Edition. It seems the first installation still Exits. It dual boots. This has filled up the Hard Drive. Should I delete The old WINDOWS folder, because I now have two Windows folders. This is what I see when I right click on My Computer>Advance>Startup and Recovery>Settings>Edit [boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS.0
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS.0="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect/sos

Please advice.
Thanks

By default, all you should see is the recycle bin.

Just clarify the info from the boot.in - as posted.

Is the default XP installation the one you wish to keep?

If so what is that versions system folder labelled as on the drive?

The boot.ini suggests the "original" version is "windows"; and that the "second version" is "windows.o". If this is the case, simply locate/delete the "windows" folder (the original version) from the drive; also edit out the reference to it in the boot.ini.

Be sure to remove the correct line... (It's the last entry in the boot.ini.)

Then reboot to verify you can still boot to the second version (windows.o); presuming so, empty recycle-bin and defrag the drive - to tidy up the scene.

Incidentally did you not try a "roll-back" etc.; or a repair installation when you had the original problem(s)?

roll back/sfc etc. info:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/proddocs/system_file_checker.asp

A roll back often can resolve problems; an sfc - as a last resort may also do the trick?
