Never download the service packs from microsoft. Use you add/remove programs to uninstall the service pack, thats the best thing to do.

I think Casey means: never download a ServicePack when it has just been released. Microsoft uses all of us as guinea-pigs, so wait a couple of months to make sure the major bugs are known at MS.

If SP2 has an uninstall function, then try that, as Casey suggested, but if there isn't, then do a SystemRestore to the point just before SP2 got installed. Normally, XP will have created such a point automatically. Any updates that you installed after the date of the restorepoint will have to be reinstalled.

Well, if you want to keep SP2:
ControlPanel>InternetOptions>Security
Lower the settings for ActiveX to be installed. BE WARNED: do not install the ActiveX controls from a 'dodgy' site, even if you can install them.

If you want still want to rollback:
START>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools
SystemRestore will be in there. Start it, select 'Restore to an earlier time' and on the next page, look for the date & restorepoint just before installing SP2. BUT SP2 COULD have special conditions for removal (or impossible?).

I recently read something about it, so I'll post once I know more. Try the first option and hang on a moment for that rollback option...

...I can't find that article...

When you installed it, was there a warning that it could not be installed?

If there wasn't, then it probably can be uninstalled via:
ControlPanel>Add/Remove Programs
Browse the list for the "Service Pack 2" entry. That will start the uninstaller. This is a 'cleaner' way than the SystemRestore method.

But if the ActiveX get installed now, why bother with a rollback? It may be cause for more trouble. Just leave it on there.

When ServicePack 3 comes around, wait a couple of months until the problems are reported back to Microsoft by the people that do install right away. That way, problems are documented before you install it.

Does the ActiveX get installed now?

I have had XP SP2 for almost a couple of months now and it is has worked flawlessly on my PC the only "drawback" if I can even call it that is not being able to run windows update, and I can understand why.

I forgot to mention the popup blocker now embedded in IE and a firewall with a couple more options. There is more about XP SP2 functionalites here and here.

Richard if you refused the Archive Files Option during SP2 installation YOU WILL NOT be able to uninstall it via add/remove programs. I will recommend you reinstall SP2 and choose the Archive Files Option this time so that you can uninstall it via add/remove program safely and easily.

Goodluck.

Hi Sabertooth,

So, you're happy with it, generally speaking?

I remember someone recently posting a question about not being able to do WindowsUpdate, was that you? Or should I look for that thread?

Happy is an arcane word when it comes to windows but as always I'd like to say so far so good.

Regarding that post I would have pointed my finger @ my shadow since I blame usually him for all my wrongdoings while I take sole responsibility for the good ones but this time around it was neither one of us.

Here is the registry work around for this problem as listed on the email that they sent me regarding this:

Navigate to these keys using the registry editor:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_LOCALMACHINE_LOCKDOWN\explorer.exe
Set value to 0

<HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_LOCALMACHINE_LOCKDOWN\iexplore.exe
Set value to 0

Now restart Windows to make the settings take effect.

Being a SP2 beta tester, I've had access to the beta since it was first released to the public on the 18th of December.

So far I haven't had any problems. I actually feel kinda bad because I have only submitted a couple bugs to Microsoft and they've been nothing big. It seems MS has done pretty well this time around.

The enhancments to IE are very nice, and the upgraded Internet Connection Firewall is a lot better than it's original counterpart. There are also TONS of RPC and DCOM security updates, understandable in response to attacks like the blaster worm.

Windows Update does work, and if you have SP2 installed you actually are beta testing version 5 of WindowsUpdate. The interface is a lot nicer than v4 and is a little easier to see what's available for download and installing it.

As to removing SP2, when you install it you are given the option to archive you files. According to the documentation, as long as you choose this option, the SP is completely removable, though I haven't actually tried it.

In the end, unless you are a beta tester, or know quite a bit about Windows in general, it's a pretty bad idea to go around installing betas. The whole point of a beta product is that it's not done yet. When it comes to something like a service pack it's even more important to realize this due to the extreme nature of the effect of a service pack on your computer.

Hopefully we'll finish up the testing in the next couple months and the service pack will be ready for distribution. I would still heed the advice given though and wait for at least a couple months after the release to make sure there are no problems with the product. We're trying to prevent that though :)
