I got 2 harddrives. 98 SE on Drive C and Xp Pro on D. I get no menue to select what drive i want to install. When i installed Xp i booted to the CD and choose to install on drive D with the 98 drive connected. What happened to the menue? I go to advanced in system properties and startup and recovery tab Default operating system
"Microsoft Windows Professional" /fastdetect
Time to display list of OS 30 secounds
Time to display recovery options 30 secounds
I click the edit i think thats the boot.ini? I see this.
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetectI see no option for 98SE can i add something to the boot.ini? Atleast try? Its better option that reformatting and starting over.
Thanks

Just to clarify first:
You can boot OK to XP on the second drive - rdisk(1);partition(1) - but cannnot see/access '98 (on the Master drive) via the boot-menu.
Initially you had '98 on the Master drive (rdisk(0)) in M$-speak) = c: and could boot to it OK; and you had a slave drive (rdisk(2)) attached prior to installing XP.
The boot-sequence was (and is still) set to first physical drive - not the second drive? When you installed XP you were still booting the PC via the first physical drive?
Can you see/access the '98 (c: ) drive from XP; and if so are the XP boot files there (ntldr/ntetect.com/boot.ini)? If no to either then are the XP boot-files in the root directory of d: drive? Also (although I doubt it'll be there) is there a bootsect.dos at either location?
The lack of display of a boot-menu is not uncommon - when only XP is present...; but you had '98 already there (on the Master drive)...
Still confirm the above info first and then let's go on from there?

I've not seen XP fail to configure a dualboot properly when installed in a secondary drive. Check in the root directory of your C drive to ensure the following files exist. You may need to unhide hidden system files in order to see them:
Boot.ini
NTLDR
NTDETECT
BOOTSECT.DOSThe first three relate to booting XP. The last is for 98.
As long as all 4 files are present you can try a manual edit of the boot.ini file however I've been unable to find an example by googling to show you the exact thing you need. The other option is to boot to your XP CD again and enter R for Recovery Console.
Log into your XP using your admin password then do the following:
At the prompt type FIXBOOT press Enter and answer Y
Then type FIXMBR press Enter and answer Y.
Remove XP CD and reboot. Your dualboot options should now appear.I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

The second article tells how to add or remove an O.S. from the boot.ini file.

Print the articles to use as reference.
