2 HD's; 1 SATA & 1 IDE - BIOS is identifying both HD's but win xp won't show second HD (old one) icon in "my computer".
SATA 120GB is primary holding OS and old 40GB IDE jumper set to slave. Any suggestions?

Go to Control Panel> Administrative tools>Computer Management>Disk Management and post back what you see there.

The Disk may not be initialized or Formatted.
Disk management should provide some insights.

Good idea to check the IDE Ribbon Cable connections at both ends. Look for bent pins in HDD plug & MOBO Plug.

There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

You need to reset the jumper on the IDE to master. The SATA and the IDE are indepentent of each other. That said, watch the POST screens during the startup to see if ALL the drives are identified by MODEL. If the IDE or any of your drives doesn't show in those screens then there is a hardware issue. The IDE controllers may be disabled in the BIOS, cables could be loose, etc. If the IDE DOES show in the POST screens then your issue may be one that Dumbob mentioned. Look in disk management to see if the drive is showing there. If so and the drive has data on it then you need to take ownership of the drive. If a new or unformatted drive then configure the drive from within disk management.

tried going to disk management and the drive is there but all the options to assign it a letter are grayed out. Will try putting jumper on master for the IDE HD

I went to web site and gives instructions on how to take ownership of a file or folder, not a drive. I tried putting jumper on master w/ IDE and POST screen shows both drives but gets stuck at verifying PMI during the boot?...it won't boot into OS. I disconnected IDE HD completely, everything works fine. There were never any problems with this HD prior to me installing new SATA. There is files on this IDE and need to keep and also use the extra space of this old IDE HD

Any advice?

Take the IDE drive out of the boot order in the BIOS. Verify the first boot device is your CD, second the SATA. How is the SATA drive connected? Connected directly to a onboard SATA port?

The instructions are the same for a folder or partition/ drive. The drive was probably greyed out if you weren't logged in with administrator rights.

Logged in w/amd rights and still had same problem with shading. Ribbin cables all checked, no concerns. Cannot find security tab under properties? HD shows up in dsk mgtm but only allows to "delete partion". HD shows up everywhere but OS??

Any other suggestions?

I'm drawing ablank at the moment but there was a thread here within the last 2 weeks that presented exactly the same problem and I believe a different poster directed them to a solution. Maybe try searching here. I will look thru my list here to see if I can find it, I am not sure I posted a response though. There is a step to take before the one I directed you to.

Is the IDE drive a Western Digital by chance? If so, WD drives have a jumper setting for Master alone, which is what you need.

Try going to control panel and use the add new hardware wizard to idenify the drive. You can scroll through the hardware list to find the most appropriate choice.

Are ALL the harddrive controllers identified in Device manager? Did you install the Motherboard chipset drivers?
