My daughter's computer is a home built with 500 MHz AMD K2 processor. It is now running Win 98 SE. I tried to run the Win XP Pro configuration checker but it always hangs about half way through. It gets stuck with the progress meter saying it is checking the DVD (there is no DVD in the computer).

Then I tried to just install the XP upgrade but it hangs with 62 minutes left.

Anybody have a suggestion?

My only suggestion would be to run setup again... but let it go all night, say at least 12-24 hours and see if it gets free by itself. There have been times that I though XP had froze, but waiting like 3-5 min, and it worked itself out. I've got a really fast system too, so it could take a bit on yours... hence the 12-24 hours.

Something else that might help even more would be to take out everything but the proc, cdrom, hard drive, memory, and video card. then run setup.

I know that won't help, but I tried. :)

I had a similar prob. Ended up formatting drive C and reinstalling 98, then xp. Even then I encountered 3 probs which were solved by itself.
Youshould take out all hardware not needed and then install xp. Afterwards put in the hardware step by step

I reckon that you should disable your virus checker and any other things like messenger etc....then have a tamper#
I think however you should run scandisk and your defragmenter before you start!!!

John How ae you??

the AMD K2 processor is not supported by Win XP. In fact none of the (at least to my knowledge) AMD processors are supported. If you want to install XP on your daughter's PC You need to get an new CPU chip. I would go with an intel one because it widely supported.

hope this helps

Having Win98 on the system, I wouldn't be surprised if many of your vital drivers need to be updated. (Especially display adapters and sound cards.) Also check with your MoBo site to see if you need to flash your bios.

Well I solved one of the problems. During the compatibility check XP would hang when it was checking the nonexistant DVD player. I found that my sound blaster software had installed a small program (I forget the name) that monitors the CD and starts various programs if you insert an audio disc, data disk, DVD etc. The program was set to look for DVD disks and I just unchecked this option.

Now the compatibility check runs fine. Unfortunately, XP still won't install. It hangs up partway through the install step where it's checking the system.

I'll try updating all drivers and MoBo BIOS. Wish me luck.

From my understanding, Microsoft is now work-
ing with AMD instead of Intel. Infact I hear
that AMD is now working with Microsoft to
develop a chip that has "XP" in it's name.

Hey John,
My cpu is an AMD Athlon and I had the same problem installing Win XP on my pc as well. The installation would hang once it got to the dos screen and would read "setup is starting windows". I soon figured out that it was my video card that was causing the problem. It seems that the newer video cards cause problems. Therefore put an older video card in, install XP, then put your original video card back in. That should fix your problem. Good Luck!
