Win XP wont boot,or boot disk wont

Everything was working fine yesterday, this morning when I went to turn my computer on, Windows XP wouldn't boot, black screen comes up with "Invalid BOOT.INI", it then comes up with a blue screen saying "unmountable boot volume" with alot more text.
I then decided to reinstal windows. So I popped in my win 98 boot disk, which I have used on other occasions, and it says "Invalid I/O Error", so I can't boot into windows, or DOS.
I suspect a virus or something as no settings have changed since last boot.
Even if you've a virus on the HD, as long as your 98 boot disk is ok (clean & write protected), you should be able to get into DOS. If you can't then I suggest you borrow or create a new boot disk from someone with a working PC (the one you're using for this?) and try that. If you still have I/O problems then it's a hardware fault
Summary: I got a friend to partition my hard-drive recently, both partitions with WIN XP on so I could use one partition for general stuff, and one for recording music, to keep the latter clean of viruses etc....
