CPU/Ram: amd 1700+

hi, my win xp won't boot up.. the screen comes up about the unsuccesful error.. where it says safe mode.. safe mode with networking.. and safe mode with command prompt.. when i choose any of them .. a long list of directories comes up but no sign of windows starting or anything so i tried.. last successful configaration.. then the screen goes completly black .. when i try load windows.. regularly.. it freezes.. what happened to my windows xp!?!? plz hlp
