Windows XP Service Pack 2 is ready to go, read all about here...

Iligitimi non carborundum est

What do you think the "SP2 screwed my system" rate will be? Maybe 1 out of every 50?
Also how many post do you think we will see at Computing.Net that read "SP2 broke my computer" or something along those lines.
I will close with this...
BACK UP BACK UP BACK your important data before installing SP2 and make sure you manualy set a system restore point as well but most important. BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP
The coming week shall be an interesting one.

Though I walk through the valley of Microsoft, I shall fear no OS for skills are with me

I'm already running the beta release of SP2 and I've only had one minor issue with windows update. I just turned on automatic updates to resolve the problem and you will be sitting around for awhile waiting for SP2a most likely a long while.

As I understand it - the Release tomorrow is only for Manufacturers - for the likes of us it will be Aug 25thCan't remember where I saw that - so can't give a Link
Lesley

Scott says to wait 30 days before installing SP2. The computer won't die if it doesn't get SP2 on day 1. And it might die if it does.
Like Kevin said, backup everyway you can.

Kevin, did you notice a barrage of prompts?
From what I've read, there seems to be prompts for every little thing imaginable.
What were your findings....are we gonna have our hands full ??Also, should the dreaded system restore be needed, is a system restore able to cleanly restore to a prior point? (with SP-2 being so large, I mean)
Thanks for any insight on this...been reading quite a bit, and there's a lot to decipher here.

Lesley, you're right. In an article published on the Net today:
[Microsoft] took an important step Friday when it released SP2 to manufacturing and promised the full release by month's end.
The full article can be found here.

DataAnvil - thanks for the confrimation
For those who wish to - the CD can be ordered here...
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
I shall order the CD but I'll wait a while before Installing it!
Lesley

"the word is that you should turn on Automatic Updates all the way, and that if you do that, Service Pack 2 will automatically install at some point on Tuesday, August 10"
Now that is from the first news link and the one just quoted from the above does not state it will be in 30days just within the month sometime. That could be Monday or 2 weeks from now. It does not clearly state any time period though. Granted they are stating by "months end" that does not give an set date as the first article does.
Bottom line is we have to sit and wait till Monday and see what happens.

All I read was
"blaa blaa blaa..
BACKUP...
blaa blaa blaa.Guess I had better backup my important data tonight.

Good idea jefro - backup your important data.
Having said that, I have been running SP2 RC2 for a couple of weeks now and it does seem very stable. I am particularly impressed with the updated pop-up stopper that comes with the updated IE6 along with the updated Firewall.
It is important that when you do install SP2, read what it says on the screen, don't just skip it and carry on. There are some important bits of information to be absorbed.
Stuart

Even MS had a fix for it's CRM product last week that was incompatible with SP2.
MS may not call it SP2a, but a month or so after SP2 ships, there will be another upgrade.
I'll wait.

From the article quited above:
>> Zone Labs Inc., noted that SP2's firewall catches inbound sinister code, but not the outbound stuff. <<
This is a not striclty true. The new Firewall prompts when any internal programme attempts to access the Internet and asks for the users approval. Just the same way as Zone Alarm does.
Stuart

NAV 2003 has no issues with the currect SP2 and I do not use ZA. I use a real hardware firewall. All of my programs have worked without any issues at all with SP2.
The only huge problem I could even think of is that when I go to download or view certain movies from joke web sites and the such. I like to collect crazy movie clips and weird and strange stuff so you gotta visit weird and strange web sites. Anyways, when you attempt to view the clip another IE window will open and you get a warning about the security files not matching but then you cannot close that IE window and it just shows a bunch of ASCII text. If you end task on just that IE window it takes down all the IE windows but this does not happen a lot so I have been dealing with it.
If anyone knows of any good sites with crazy things such as car wrecks, things blowing up, news clips that do not make the air, things like that e-mail me. I'm not talking about any porn folks. Trust me if I wanted to find that I would not need any help.
TommyO,
As far as a ton of pop-ups about stopping this and that all that appears is a information bar at the top of IE, well it is at the top of the web page stating that IE has stopped an ActiveX control from installing or stopped some script from running but you can tell it to run the controls or scripts with a mouse click if you desire.
I welcome the added security controls as it will help keep the ignorant out of trouble and should slow down the browser hijackings. Then again, we will see :)
Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah....BACKUP!!!
At least it got threw...

Do we have to had the SP1 installed to instal sp2?
No. SP2 incoporates the updates of SP1
Stuart

Thanks Kevin, and all for the good info. I think I gonna wait until I recieve the CD from Microsoft...I ordered it yesterday.
System restore is ON and ready; just in case. Have a nice evening all.

I've used sp2 for a month now and all is well.
If you need a simple solution, try mine. I try to give advise on things that have happened to my PC. Changes in registry can be FATAL!

Actually, what I forgot to add was that I use winpatrol and it was great when I finished d/l'ing SP2. SP2 tried re-installing Msn Messenger after I had removed it, and winpatrol kept the msn messenger from being re-loaded to my PC.
