since removing win98 and loading winxp i have no sound. have tried downloading drivers, but does not help. any suggetions?? thanks, steve

What type of sound ?
Do you have a PCI sound card, or do you have an integrated sound chip on the motherboard ?If the sound is onboard, then you will find the drivers either on the CD that came with your motherboard, or at the manufacturer's site.
If the sound is from a PCI card, then you need to look at the card to find the exact name and model number, and ensure you get the right drivers downloaded.

Your sound codecs are loaded with your motherboard driver files. If you still have that disc then run it. and reinstall the motherboard drivers.
That is if you have built in sound with your mobo. If you are using a sound card then you will have to install them from the installation disc that came with your sound card.
If you have non of the required discs then download the followin uttility:
everest download here
run it and find out what your sound card is and then go to either the manufacture of your motherboards home/driver download page or google for drivers for them. then install them to the desktop or run them if self executable then reboot and windows wizard will install them for you.IN THE MATTERS OF STYLE,
