Does XP defrag your pagefile @ each shutdown? Could be that that is the case now... so turn it OFF if it's ON now. I don't really know how you can change it (I did it, but can't remember how @ this moment), so search in Google on "XP defrag pagefile", and you'll find your answer.
If you don't, mail me.

Don't shut down. Go into SUSPEND mode, if you lnow how. Then let it AUTO-SHUTDOWN, or AUTO=HIBERNATE (via the ScreenSaver in the Display Panel of the ControlPanel).
On my notebook, I have a HIBERNATE button, which I prefer to use. For lengthy BOOTS& SHUTDOWNS as you are mentioning, I budget time for this to happen (whilst I do other things).
