Old machine. Had XP on old drive, bought larger drive 160GB, smartdrive enabled - sees full size. Jumper set to master. Fully recognized in BIOS. Created partition, formatted, hangs every time on setup is loading windows. Works great on 2 other machines I have. Old machine, will only take Win 95/98. Set BIOS to default settings, even flashed BIOS. During XP setup, set HAL to Standard PC, Never gets to partition/format with XP setup CD...made XP boot CD/FDD, nothing. Installed Win98 and attempted XP upgrade, hangs.

Put the cd in the drive after Win '98 boots to the desktop and run the compatability tester. XP does have minimum system requirements.

Done that. XP was on the system before I purchased the new drive. It meets XPs HW requirements. Thanks for the fast response! Much appreciated.

BIOS is LBA-compatible-160GB fully recognized in BIOS, tried with many different HDs....even a 20GB. So size is not the issue. Even when 137GB was recognized, still wouldnt load. The old drive was 160GB as well. XP was running perfect on it. I ended up formatting it and giving it to someone since I wasnt using this PC really...now I sort of use it...bought a new HDD and this is when it started. Thanks for the help!

Try stripping the machine down to the bare essentials: CD drive Hard drive Graphics card PS2 Keyboard and mouse No external devices connected

If the bios has a virus protection setting, disable it.
The drive wouldn't be an SATA drive by chance that needs the controller drivers loaded first?
