Comment: Don't know what happened - maybe virus maybe registry screw up, but Win XP goes to logon screen then I get a window asking to login (I am the only user on my computer so I don't have multiple user profiles). When I click on the login button the system says "Saving your settings" and then logs off. I can't get beyond the login screen!!! Tried to reboot from a diskette, my Del menu (BIOS) seems to be disabled. Has anyone had this trouble before? Please share your ideas!

Reply: (edit)kushal, I have a Ghost copy of the partition, so no problem there. The problem with the BIOS - well, it seems I was just hitting the wrong button (Del instead of Esc) :-). Going to reinstall everything... RobbieDickon,
Thanks for the suggestion, but it is of no use to me as I can't get past the damn logon screen :-( As for malware/spyware that may have caused this -- I had a trojan in a zip file, but my antivirus seemed to have intercepted it successfully.. At least it told me so and suggested cleaning (well that didn't work so I deleted the file). And right after that the problems started. Do you think the virus may have caused this?

Reply: (edit)Still can't get past the logon screen... Is there a way to get past it - maybe a combination of buttons or some other trick? My DVD with the Ghost copy can't be read from the DOS, so I really need to get to Windows GUI to copy it to my other partition..

Reply: (edit)Tried every possible mode - Safe, Boot Logging, With Command Prompt - everything. The strange thing is, no matter what mode I choose I always get to the same GUI, with that nag logon screen I can't get past. It really starts bothering me...

Reply: (edit)This appears to be fairly common problem? A trawl in google or teoma (etc) using the string: xp logon logoff loop brings up a range of hits... Rather than duplicate results here - perhaps you do a trawl??? IF/when yiou do resolve it perhaps you can/will post how? That way more folks willknow for future use.

Reply: (edit)Hi rturro, A friend of mine just came to me with the exact same problem. He said that the antivirus found several damaged files on his laptop's hard drive and then he delete those files. I have many doubts of his explanation as he is not really a well informed user. Anyways, I think it might be a registry issue, like you said. I once found an article on Microsoft.com's knowledge base on how to fix the registry from the recovery console. I think I'll try that after backing up a few files for the guy. I'll let you know how it turned out... Maybe you have formatted the drive already but, perhapes you are interested just for the fun of it.

Reply: (edit)Hi again... after a short research on the internet, i found that this problem is due to a type of spyware from blazeFind which chanches a registry value, and non-updated spyware removal software wont fix this key back when removing blazefind... I found this article(http://www.winxptutor.com/wsaremove.htm), it didint help me but you might wanna try it. So I restored the registry from the console according to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 307545 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/EN-US/) Note: If yo follow only part one of the article you´ll be ok but you will not bring back your previous restore points since you will have windows believe that it is just as if it was first installed (i.e. there wont be any users but Administrator althoug user's folders and files will remain there). If you try to follow parts 2 and 3 of the article you might find yourself in the position that you were in the first place, even thoug if you restore your system to a point way back to the date of the problem. I am still trying to undertstand why. Anyway I hope that helped..

Reply: (edit)Sometimes the fact that English is the dominant working language on the www can be a nuisance (for non English as a first language folks)... I tend to use error message text as a string, or just a few baisc words to describe the conditions/problem etc. Hits relating to the virus problem mentioned by "mbiseca" do turn up using the string I suggested. It would be useful if "rturro" posts back with how he fixes it, as t'will be useful info for future reference?

Reply: (edit)Hi again, Tried the spyware removal suggestions, to no avail. I.e. booted into Recovery Console, did what they suggested, rebooted - the problem did not go away. Yes, I found the description of the problem on different websites (winxptutor, experts-exchange, and another one I forgot the name) - all of them suggested basically the same thing. Well, it did not work for me - the system just kept kicking me out of the logon screen. So, I simply booted from a WinXP installation disk, did a clean re-intall, and once I had a GUI I copied my Ghost copy to the D: partition, rebooted from a Ghost boot disk and just replaced the existing partition for the backup one. Thanks God I have this "back-it-all-up" habit, so the only disappointment was I lost a few settings and recently installed programs as my Ghost backup was as of August 2004 :-). Right now my laptop is back, up and running. And I have a new Ghost copy, as of January 2004 :). The lesson here (if there is one to be learned) is, I guess, there are some exotic situations that may happen that are not described or met by many people, so - back up stuff if you don't want to lose it! Thanks a lot everybody for your suggestions.

Reply: (edit)"rturro" Thanks for posting back - so seldom happens. Once again the value of frequent/regular backups is demonstrated...
