Where is the setting to set whether or not Win XP logs off the current user when there has been no activity for a while? I need it to stay active in order to tranfer a large file.
Thanks for any advice.
Gary

Hi Gary,
I assume you mean: after a few minutes of no activity, the screensaver comes up and when the activity resumes, the login is required?
The computer never really logs off, it just asks for the UserPassword again. Any programs you have running, will keep running.
Rightclick your desktop in an empty area, and select properties (or ControlPanel>Display), and on the screensaver page, un-check the 'on resume, password protect' box.
Or do you mean that your UserAccount is allowed to stay logged on for a certain period of time and then log off automatically?___________________________________________

svg,
Is there such feature like this available in XP Pro? If so, how?
Regards

Yes it seems that my Admin account logs off automatically after a certain period.

Gary:
"when there has been no activity for a while? I need it to stay active in order to tranfer a large file."Your statement leads me to think that you are referring to a screensaver action, and isn't really related to a User-Logoff. So try disabling your screensaver. Your download-program should keep on running even if the screensaver is active, though, but there are exceptions to this (I think):
1) Some script that's automatically logging users off as described here (very advanced though, via IIS):
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;3155842) If you are on dial-up connection, there may be a setting in its connection-properties that automatically closes the connection, or your ISP could also be doing something similar (but this should not be related to your computer being idle). I think there are programs around for keeping a dial-up connection active, but I don't have a link for that :(
3) Maybe some sort of Power-Saving that's kicking in on the Network Adapter, but I would assume that if the connection is busy, this wouldn't happen.
XpUser:
About the UserAccount logging off automatically after a certain period:
I may have gotten this slightly wrong: A UserAccount can be set to only be allowed to log on during certain times of the day. It will automatically logoff outside these times.I think I confused that with the ability to have a UserAccount-Password expire after a certain period. Although this setting could be doing exactly what I meant, but I haven't tried this, so I don't know what would happen. Anyway, type this into a CommandPrompt (START>All Programs>Accessories> CommandPrompt) to see all the options you can set on a UserAccount:
net help user UserAccountName
and type this to see how your Account is configured:
net user UserAccountNameIf you feel the urge to experiment with these options, I strongly suggest creating a new UserAccount and practising on that first.
PS: maybe some sort of logon-script could also logoff users automatically after a certain time.
