System specs:
motherboard: ASUS A7V8X-X
CPU: AMD XP2400+
HD: Maxtor 40G 7200rpm
400W powersuplySystem freezes at "Welcome to Windows XP installation" screen. I have also tried multiple installation CD's and Windows 2000 CD, with the exactly same problem.
After the computer freezes, I've booted the system and cleaned the HD with Partition Magic 7.0 boot disk and cleaned the MBR with fdisk /mbr from win98 bootdisk. I also set BIOS setup to default, re-plugged the BIOS battery, removed all cards in PCI ports, tried to install without mouse attached.
The system is completely new and no OS has been installed.
When booting the system with clean HD, system gives message saying something like "cannot find OS", like it should when there is no OS installed. And dont reply "why dont you just send it back to resellers helpdesk", the reason is I want to learn how to fix this myself. :)
Thanks in advance.

Had a similiar problem myself one time working on a friend's computer. I had to temporarly disable the secondary cache via the bios to get XP to install. After installation I turned it on and everything was ok.

i had a simerler problem, my video card was semi incompatable with my mobo.
win 98 worked but xp, nothing
