Hello again. =) I've got 2 computers running XP Pro. One of our engineers attempted to install a new version of ArcView, which apparently corrupted the paging file on each computer. The error message is something about the paging file is too small, and a set of instructions is given to correct it. The downside is, once you've gone through all the steps, it won't "save", and the problem keeps coming back. ArcView has since been uninstalled, but the paging file error is still there. This error is slowing down both computers and basic functions take much longer than normal. I've never seen this particular error before and I don't have a clue how to fix it. I would LOVE your suggestions! Thanks!

Paging file size can be set manually. If you are having problems with a corrupt pagefile turn of page file, delete pagefile.sys. Reboot machine and then re-enable the pagefile.

Raj - Thanks for the suggestion. I've found the pagefile on the hard drive. Can you give me some ideas on where to go to re-enable the pagefile? Thanks!

Hi Josh. Txs for the link. Unfortunately I choke on Step 4. There is no Security tab to add the computer name etc. I tried to by-pass all that by directly setting the memory. It did actually save this time - which is an improvement, but the amount of virtual memory allocated is still zero.

More suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

hi Cindy

not sure what arc is , but your windows xp page file is found & controlled here;
start/settings/controlpanel/system
advancedtab/
performance
settings tab
advanced tab
virtual memory tab
change

click s'ystem managed size' and reboot,
don think u need to do anything other than that.

1Step - Thank you for the suggestion! We've tried that and it was set on system managed. The system was allocating zero for virtual memory. I can't seem to get it to allocate anything for it - hence all the slowness and memory issues. I have yet to try deleting the file itself... I'd like to do that as a last resort (because I'm not sure what THAT will create and if I can undo it). BTW - ArcView is a mapping type program that uses a LOT of memory. ~Cindy

Hi,

I just did a search and found this site, as I had the "paging file is too small" message too, and nothing would stop it. I tried changing my settings, even setting it to "No paging file" and defragmenting the drive(a fragmented page file will also cause the error). Nothing worked.

Then, I looked in my Device Manager, and noticed my "A" floppy drive was disabled.
Further detective work(Device Manager, View, Resources by Type, IRQ's) led me to see that the IRQ(#6) was being used by TDkd, a system that's a part of my DevStudio program. I simply disabled it, rebooted, and WHALA- "A" drive worked, and NO MORE Paging file message.

Seems that an IRQ conflict can cause windows to believe that it needs to allocate major physical memory to overcome the problem.

Hi all

Hi Bill! Wow - thanks for sharing that info. I will definitely look into an IRQ conflict. Thanks again! ~Cindy
