Brand new Compaq Presario XP Home Edition SP1 installed. Sound was working but now I get an error saying there are no active mixers installed. This happens when I try to play any type of audio. When I go into my sound properties everything is greyed out. In device manager under sound, video game controllers I have Audio Codecs Legacy Audio Drivers listed 4 times Legacy Video capture devices listed once, Media control devices listed once and VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller {WDM} listed once. If I check the properties all devices are enabled and functioning including mixers. I can't seems to find anything on line as to an error about having no active mixer devices avaiable. I tried to uninstall and reinstall and still everything is greyed out. My speakers are working & when I turn them on and the Vol is turned up on the speakers I here noise. Not music or anything but almost a humming noise. Here are my system stats below if anyone could help out..

AMD Athlon XP 2400+ MMX 3DNOW 2.0GHZ
256MB Ram
Directx 9.0 Award Bios v6.00pg
VIA AC'97 Audio Wave
Device ID PCI\VEN

Go into device manager and right click all of your sound devices and remove them. Reboot the computer and let windows autodetect your soundcard and reload the drivers. Once windows finishes rebooting go back into your device manager and see if you have any conflicts. If there is a problem then it will have an "!" or "?" beside it. Use the update driver wizaed in device manager to update the drivers from your motherboard's CD. I am assumming that this is the only soundcard device you have installed on this computer. If you have an additional PCI soundcard installed then you will have to disable one of the sound cards through device manager. You will right click it and choose properties and put a tick by the disable box

I will give it a try, I have already tried to uninstall it but windows will just pop up at say new hardware found & install the drives. The only thing I can remove is the VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller {WDM} The only option for everyting else is to disable or enable. I will try that now & see what happens & yes this is the only device I have installed...

Will check back

Chris

Just tried it & still nothing, When windows came back up it did not even saying anything about new hardware found but everything is installed and from what it says working. This is driving me crazy. When I turn on my speakers I here static each time I move my mouse around so I know they are working. Since the sound is on the mother board I don't think there card something to pull out and put back... Any other Ideas..

Thanks

Chris

Hi,

I had exactly the same problem (still don't know why).
Do "a restore to a previous configuration".
You have to choose a restore date where everything was working well.

It works for me!

Cheers,
Ricky
