I am having a problem with XP Pro -- Wait, make that ANOTHER problem with XP Pro... You know, I really didn't believe upgrading would be THAT bad...boy was I wrong. In any case, the problem I am having is that I cannot install anything without some kind of error. One program gives me a 1606 error, another a 1612 error, so on and so forth until I have no hair left. I have read all the knowledge base articles about the errors, tried their supposed "fix" and nothing. One proggie gives me this error:
Error 1606: Could not access network location "::\Documents and Settings\<My Name>\SendTo". And tells me to make sure I have access to it. Well, I have administrative privs and the MS solution of adding an %ALLUSERSPROFILE% line to my registry did not work, even though this is a "clean" resinstall of a failed upgrade (get my drift on why no details? :) albeit into the \WINDOWS directory. Basically, a prior parallel install created dupes of my user dirs and I think I know which one I'm using as I've changed it to the default but why else would I be getting these kinds of errors? I can't find anyone else who seems to have had the same problem, and Microsoft just says "format and re-install" thanks thats very helpful unless you have a RAID and don't wanna back up 60GB of stuff. Sorry, blowing off some steam there. If anyone has any ideas, I'm open. Thanks

Try reinstalling the OS with external peripherals (printer, scanner..) and all expansion cards (except video and RAID controller) taken out. Goodluck..

I figured out what the problem is here, and hopefully this will help a multitude of other people with the same problem: If you have a problem with XP Pro and somehow get things mixed up to the point where you have multiple user dirs, etc, and then have to say, Clean Install? Well there ya go. I did a clean install with no format and thus I have a fresh Windows dir, then I imported a backed up registry just for kicks and got all my software where it needed to be, except for one minor detail: Lost alot of my Uninstall infos, which some progs refer to when they launch their setup, no matter what you are doing with them. So I have no problems installing other progs now, but some of my old ones look for that "installed" info and then I get the 1606 Error or 1612 Error. Does anyone have a method for manually removing a prog from the registry? I know the Search and Destroy method and I've done that manually but it ain't much fun! Anyone know of a prog or have a suggestion that might make it quicker and easier? Thanks
