Hi there,
I'm considering installing Windows XP on my laptop, but it's below the "minimum spec" as recommended by MS. Now, I know with previous version of Windows - and, indeed, most software - that it will sometimes function acceptably if you use less than that. But would this approach work with Windows XP Pro?
My laptop is a Dell Latitude CPi. PII 266, 128MB RAM, 6Gb HD, 24x CD Drive, but with only 2Mb video RAM.
Would this run reasonably on my laptop? Or is it better sticking with Win 98, which seems to run at a decent speed already?
Any opinions would be appreciated! Thanks!
-Andy :-)

Hi,
I'd stick with 98 also. Don't know what minimums you are talking about, but an example with this machine I am using is that XP runs really well with 512 MBs Ram as opposed to 256. Also, if you notice that more and more new PCs are coming standard off the shelf with 512 now. Thats not even considering the ever increasing capacity of hard drives.
Unless you are having real serious problems with win 98, I wouldn't even consider it.
My opinion also!

It will run, your processor is the minimum requred by XP to run, and 128MB is really the minimum amount of RAM that you should have in any XP machine. Your video may have trouble rendering properly if you have too many apps open at the same time. (you may be able to watch the screen redraw). It will work, but it would be very slow. that is like running Windows 98SE on a 486 DX2 66 with 4BM ram and a 500MB hard drive. It will run, but it will take forever to get anything done.

Thanks, guys .... I think that I'll stick with Win 98 on the laptop, then!
I mean, whilst I love Win XP and everything, I'm not going to love it as much if it's going at the speed of a turtle crawling through treacle :-)
Many thanks!
-Andy
