Win XP logs off as soon as I log on

Whenever I logon to Windows XP, whether as an administrator or a limited account, as soon as the desktop background appears I am immediately told that Windows is logging off and saving my settings. I cannot access using safe mode with this problem. Essentially, whenever I try to logon normally I am spat back out to the welcome screen or logon screen.
I would like to either repair this issue , or re install XP Home ed. the problem is don't want to take the risk to loose all my files in My documents folder.
can someone help me fix the issue from the repair console ? or tell me how to copy my document folder to my secondary hard drive ?

your cpu could be running too hot. take the cover off of your computers case and see if there is excessive amounts of dust on the heatsink and fan.

CPU might not be it as it does not shut down the computer....It only logs you off to the welcome screen. Could you please tell me as to did you install any new application after which this happened. Anything new that might have been done on this comp.

I have the same problem too, could someone please help me. I could not startup my computer because of a software error. I ran a repair install and when i tried to log back on it logs me right off. Even in safe mode!!! HELP!
