You should check the minimum requirement of windows xp.
233 MHz processor, 128 MB RAM, 1.5 GB free space in hard drive, VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution.
If minimum requirement is OK then you should change the RAM and then try to install.

RAM could be the problem. I suggest you download and run from the boot memtest86+. Get a bootable iso and burn to CDR.

No errors are acceptable. Also, check the site for your motherboard and look for a list of recommended RAM modules.

Is your copy of WinXP a copy on CDR or an original? Is it an OEM from Dell, gateway, etc? Does the WinXP CD have at least SP1 integrated into the CD?

Windows XP has all ways had an issue with driver files. The best way is to start with the barest minimum hardware installed.
Remove (disconnect) all unnecessary hardware. Use 1 stick of ram, 1 optics drive, no floppy, no add-on usb hardware like printers or speakers or anything like that. and No over clocking till after the operating system is installed.

Change Is Good

Basically agreeing with previous posters. If XP won't install properly, you have defective hardware somewhere (its not going to be a driver problem, as the install only uses XP's own drivers, and will install none if it doesn't have any).

RAM is most likely (but could be anything, need process of elimination) - but one thing you didn't mention - what was installed previously? Because if socket 478 P4, it must wither have been around a while or you've just built machine from second hand parts.

If it did have a previous installation - did that work ok. If its a recent build from old parts, then look at the parts.
