When I try and install XP it works fine up until the system re-boots. After clicking on continuing itstallation I get a blue screen stating 0x0000007B (0XF9E8563C,0XC0000034,0X00000000,0X00000000) it states "setup stops because damage can be done to your computer and that it might have a virus on it or that I must uninstall any new hard disk controllers". It is a new hard drive so there are no viruses on it. I've got a weird split - C:\ is only 2 gigs as Im not sure how to alter it - so it might be that. I am unaware of any incompatability of win XP with my hard drive - IBM IDE 123.5 7200 RPM - but its running Win 98 2nd edition fine. My system should be able to handle XP fine so its not that its not powerfull enough. Please help as I would really like XP on my new sys - I've got win 98 on this one.

Thanks in advance

Dont click "continue installation" once you re-boot.Just let it boot straight back up and winxp should be installed.

Not quite sure what you mean. When the cpu restarts it comes to a screen in DOS mode giving you the option to either Install win XP or cancell installation. If cancel Win XP is chosen win 98 boots up.

What do you mean by having a weird split.
Drive C is only 2 gigs. Are there any other partitions on the drive?
Which partition are you trying to install XP on?

Are you wanting to scrap 98 off your new system totally and install XP? Then it's best to do a clean install. Before loading XP, back up the data files you wanna keep(you will have to reinstall the software) in 98, assuming you can still load it. Then boot from the XP CD, do a new install, not a continued installation, delete and reformat your partitions and install the OS.

Also, I recommend allocating more than just 2g for the operating system partition-at least 10g. Your IBM HD is 123.5 correct?

I'll try that. Yea my hard drive has 123 gigs. I have it partitioned 5 ways. The original drive ( c:/ ) is really small as I wasn't sure how set everything up. Win 98 set it up to 2 gigs. So I have to clear everything of the hard drive and then install from the CD? How many disc is the proper version of win XP as i'm not sure whether mine can do that. Also when setting the Hard drive up whats the best split? Is the logical partioning thing the split? As for the partion that its installing on I guess its C drive. I don't mind whether I do a clean install or a update install as I have nothing on the drive at the moment - its a new P.C.
