Subject: Win XP in Toshiba Satellite 2800
Comment:

I have the Win ME in my notebook and i plan to install my Win XP to the notebook. I'm worried because it's just designed for Win ME and Win 2000. in addition, due to the compatibility issues for the Ethernet, DVD rom, display, modem and etc.

I search through the Toshiba website for answers but seems like the drivers download is just available in Win Me platform and Win 2000 platfrm. None for Win XP. What a sad thing for me.

Looking for further expert advise.

thanks

Put the XP disk in the Toshiba and choose 'upgrade advisor'. Allow it to connect to microsoft if you like. After a few minutes you will be presented with a list of components XP does't have drivers for. Note these down carefully ignoring any 'incompatibile infra red data stack' message ( flaw in xp ). Check with Toshiba that you have the latest BIOS for your laptop whether it is marked as 'for xp' or not, but don't worry unless it specifically says that you CANNOT use this machine with XP.

You now have two useful choices:

1. Install XP as an upgrade (so you can remove it later if you have to) and then do the windows update. You can then evaluate the result.

2. Search http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp?corporate=true
for drivers for anything that is 'incompatible' in your list. You can do a google search for anything that is on your list but not on microsoft's update site and soon find out if there is a problem.

Personally I would go for option 1- it will take 2-3 hours and give you a 100% result with the option of returning to ME if neccessary. I have done exactly this with a fujitsu siemens laptop with ME and the advisor told me I was missing software for the infra red data stack, the sound card (sigmatel 97) and the graphics adaptor. I did the install missing these drivers, updated to get them and now no problems.

bon chance
