win xp, ECC memory, and a IRQL error

Comment:

I am getting a driver IRQL not less or equal error on a comp I built with win xp home:
shuttle ak31
athlon xp 1600+
256 MB crucial DDRAM
gf2 ti
ac 97 onboard audio
netgear fa311 NIC
IBM 60GXP 40 GB

I have done every possible driver update that I can think of and I have messed with the IRQ's to get them set up correctly, I cannot think of anything thing else at all to do except swap out some hardware. I was wondering if ECC memory could solve the problem? -- from what I understand the problem is caused by a driver or file accessing an invalid place in memmory.

also the blue screen mentions a kmixer.sys file. any ideas please help!

I know there are a lot of people with this problem, because I am another one of them. Is there any solutions, though?
Mine happens when I shut down a program that requires a lot of memory, like a game or a high qual. photo program.
I built my computer myself with Win XP...
Athlon xp 1700
512 ram
80 gig maxitor 7100
Voodoo 3 video card

Same, when downloading/sending mails with outlook 2002 or netscape 6 on a win 2000 laptop, ONLY when connecting over ADSL and VPN.

A colleague seems to have fixed probs with a MTU change. (Down to 1400)

Ideas welcome.

Same thing.. but mine is random. Sometimes during login, sometimes listening to MP3's, sometimes in Word or IE. I've built about a dozen Athlon XP 1600 1700+ systems and they are all doing this occassionally. It's killing me.. any ideas???

Every Body seems to be saying the same thing, but are all your messages the same, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, is not a specific enough error message.
The parameters that accompany the message is the more important thing
Error should read
0x0000000a, 0x00000004, 0x00000001, (This Parameter is the Hard/Software that is causing the problem, if you can find out what memory space uses this address then bingo you have your solution.
This should help you
by the way I have this at least once a day.

Possibly something to do with your BIOS, usually, you can look at your event log and then system events to find the actual message.
Also try changing the Computer Driver in device manager to standard PC, this stops windows from using its own IRQ table, and assigns all hardware new IRQ's
If your computer driver says its a ACPI compliant computer, then chances are windows has assign most of your hardware to IRQ11.
See what happens.

I'm guessing this irq 'conflict' is created by the screwy acpi function on win2k/XP. If irql is a chronic problem with your computer, update your bios or remove acpi as soon as possible. For me it got to the point that the ntosknrl.exe got corrupted because of some datestamp issue. Needless to say i couldn't re-install win2k on c: drive to rescue my crap so i had to install it on d: and then backup everything, and then install back to c: with no acpi. Yea it's a pain in the ass.

Actually i think my HD is about to die. I get a lot of ntosknrl.exe datestamp error when i try to boot&install win2k from cd. This process worked fine with a spare hard drive i have.
The one 'dying' is a 7 month old ibm deskstar 40gb 7400rpm

i also had the irql_not_less ... Error.
AMD Douron 700
ASUS A7V - Bord
384Mb SDRAM ...
After a BIOS-Update, a driverchange to "standart-pc" nothing happend. So I startet to unmount "every" hardware in my PC. To come to the point: When I unplugged my HP - Scanner 3200C (parallelport), the error disappeared.

PS: To decode your errormessage look at: http://www.usc.uni-karlsruhe.de/usc/faq_faq.asp?id=18?=en (german)

I got the same error with a new Gateway. I called gateway and they said to re-format the hard drive. Guess I won't be buying any more Gateway PC's.

Any thoughts?

ah i fixed my problem as well. It turned out to be a bad memory stick - crucial 256 ecc/registered DDR ram. Beats my why it died. My bios is set to detect/correct errors, etc. At least those crucial guys send me a new stick within 24hrs all the way from idaho!

See www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000365

Basically, update your drivers, update Roxio (or go to a real cd burning software package), if that doesn't do it, you may be looking at hardware problems, the link above explains how to translate the error, and see what is causing it.

Good luck

most of the time, it's a software problem. happens when windows runs out of irq's (or at least thinks it does). If you can get to safe mode, do a system restore.

Hi,

I've been struggling with the same problem for a couple of days. Funny thing is it started out of the blue... Crap joke, sorry..

Anyway, now when I've pulled out my second HDD, a 30 Gb IBM Deskstar, everything seems to working just fine again.

My primary HDD is on NTFS and this IBM is on FAT32 but that shouldn'r make any difference. And it's been working fine for about 10 months so...

I've been experiencing sudden crashes for the last two weeks and I am using NT I also have a partition with XP (for the laugh ;-) ) and I used that to defrag my NT partition. It almost exclusively crashes from within Opera or when shutting down internet related programs.

I am hooked to the net via DSL so I suppose the Ethernet card must be the culprit. But I've had that for 1.5 years now ..
