Win XP Drivers & Modem problem

I read about people getting XP drivers on this board, yet when i goto my manufacture's websites they have no XP drivers. Could someone point me to where I should be going to get XP drivers.

I read something about a SB Live fix (which i'll need) and I need a new modem driver. Cause the default XP gives my modem doesn't work. And I can't get it to install right from the modem CD.

Here is a question: Should the port that the modem uses (lets say port 3) show up under the ports tab in Device Manager. Mine doesn't, this is the problem I think. I have tried installing the W2k drivers, but it keeps asking me to which port I want to install it and all it gives me for opions is the 2 serial ports. I have tried install another port, but it doesn't show up in the list, and the port has an error on it also (the port I made).

For your information my modem is a Diamond Supra 56k PCI.

The best drivers for Windows XP are Win2K drivers at this moment. Manufacturers of your hardware will supply true WinXP drivers only then when XP is officially released(25th October)or later. From what I've seen nVidia is the only supplier of a true WinXP driver for their graphic cards at this moment, all other drivers I use are Win2K drivers. For your modem you can use the Win2K or NT drivers and you probably have to force XP of using them(choose the option, "Don't search, I will choose which drivers...")For the SBLive! you can install LiveWare! 3.0 for Win2K. The only problem with this software is that sometimes you'll get an shutdown error caused by one of the SBLive! drivers(devldr32.exe). This is what you have to do after installation of LiveWare! 3.0 to get rid of that :

Go to c:\windows\system32--->rename devldr32.exe in devnew.exe(may choose another name)--->create a shortcut from the renamed file--->drag the shortcut into your startup folder.

Good luck

I tried letting XP detect my modem. It gets installed but when I go to dial, it doesn't dial. Actually, I can't hear it dial but it is dialing (i pick up the phone and listen), yes i have my modem speaker turned on before anyone asks. Ok so it does dial, but it won't connect to the server that i am dialing (its not the server because i have tried multiple servers). I am running RC1 build 2505, should I goto RC2? I am doubtful that they changed drivers at this point in time but, you never know i guess.

Has anyone else had this problem??

Just disable the "default connection" option of your dial-up connection, this worked with me.

I have a Diamond SupraExpress 56i PCI modem that won't install under XP. Have tried all the obvious remedies but no good - when I try to connect it doesn't dial although it clearly thinks it is dialling!
Has anyone found a solution yet - Diamond just suggest using the Win2000 driver but that's what I'm doing!

thanks
Cortez

Just a little comment about my modem woes on Win XP Pro. I was using a Motorola SM56 modem on Win 2000 before upgrading to Win XP. The OS refused to recognize the Win2K driver for SM56. I gave up, bought another modem (a Connexant chipset) that came with a proper Win XP driver. But I got the same installation problem. After spoken to about a zillion people (well three actually, but felt like it was that many) from Microsoft tech support and the modem manufacturers, it appears that there may be a slight glitch with upgraded OSes.

If you do a reformat and clean install, most Win2K drivers will work. However, if you just simply upgrade, some modem drivers (including those designed specially for Win XP) will give you problems.

These modem xp driver problems are strange...Im starting to believe it is soft modems that are having the worst of it.
I installed XP on a 6 year old 233 PIII and experienced no problems whatsoever with any hardware of software, including the Rockwell hard modem. Did the same on a 6 month old 1gig Thunderbird but the diamond soft modem doesnt want to know XP (or vice versa)..... Why hasnt Microsoft told us what we can buy that will work.
Their "XP partners" on their site dont sell modems only full systems.... what is going on?
Ive picked up a couple of tips I havent tried yet re my diamond modem on this site ...I'll let you know how it goes.
Cheers
Mac

I too had problems with a Connexanat HCF 56K PCI Modem not being able to install the drivers in XP.A solution to this is by selecting the hardware from the list that XP gives, select modems and then select Generic as the type. Then select SoftK56 and next and that will install drivers which will work with your modem. Ive been using it for days and no problems yet. This may work for other software type modems.
Good luck
