I have a recurring problem with my XP desktop changing resolutions on me. Every now and then (about 1/3 of the time I start up my computer), the desktop will change back to 1024x768. I run my system on 1154x864 - weird I know, but good enough on my 15" monitor.
I have a GeForce2 MX/MX 400 gfx card, with 4.4.0.3 drivers (44.03 from the nVidia site).
It's merely annoying rather than catastrophic, but since I have my desktop icons along the *bottom* of my desktop, every time the desktop resizes I have to shift 'em back...
Cheers,
Matt

It sounds like you have a monitor that is not happy running at the higher resolution.
I don't think you have a video card or software problem at all.
