Many Thanks Be,
I ticked the align to grid box and they are all sitting nicely on the desktop.
One more question. Is it possible to change the grid dimensions so that the icons are closer together.?

Right click an empty space on the desktop, left click Properties, click the Appearance tab, Advanced tab. In the drop down list you'll see Icon Spacing for Vertical + Horizontal.
