WIN XP CREATING HD SECTOR ERRORS-Help!!

hi - having problems with a new install of xp and the old 2.1gig seagate drive i put it on (FAT format) - it keeps stopping, i get error messages saying "data lost due to hardware error" and scandisk reports i have 300k of bad sectors in my HD - and its going up all the time....
config - chaintech socket 7 mobo, amd 500 cpu, 64mb ram, seagate 2.1 gig hd... running xp professional build2600

When HD's start getting bad sectors, you should consider getting a new one. There's no way to get rid of it usually, and it only increases. It just means that the HD is getting old (or is defective)
Sounds like your hard drive is going bad . Back up all your data that you need to save and think about getting a new hard drive SOON. Sounds like this to me because you say it keep adding more bad sector, if it did not do this you would be fine but since it is getting worse a new hard drive would be a good idea. Good luck RSG
