Often when I connect to the Internet, the Computer completely freezes, and the problem seems to occur the most when a popup box appears. Ever since I upgraded, my Modem has continually made the dial up noise when connected to the internet, even with modem sound turned off. I wonder if this could be the problem. My computer also freezes when i put a game cd into my dvd drive - i ran dxdiag, and it said that there were probs with directsound and directmusic. ive already reinstalled my modem and sound card several times. could anyone tell me where i can reinstall dx 8.1 from, or give me any help at all?

Do you have Office XP installed ???
If you do it may be the speech recognition that's cauing issues.
check the task manager processes for sapisvr.exe and see how much memory it is using .... end the process and see if it solves your issue
If you want to disable speech recognition, you'll have to go thru the regional settings and lang in the ctrl-panel..

good luck

WinXP SUCKS! This stupid sapisvr.exe keeps gobbling up 40 megs, and freezing my whole machine. I'm so sick of XP. Does anyone have any idea how to lose this stupid speech recognition nonsense? I mean crap, if I knew it was going to crash everything on my machine every 20 minutes, I wouldnt have wasted my time. I deleted every instance of it from my computer, and it keeps getting put back by wonderful XP. Son of a BITCH, I'm going back to Linux.

Don't open a popup window or explorer window, cus that will start it. I usually keep my task manager on while surfing, so i can spot sapisvr coming, and delete it. But is there a permananent solution? Do i have to uninstall Office XP? Does everyone have this problem?

I had the same problem as you mentioned above. However, what I found out was, if you don't push the microphone button on the language bar OR if you shut off the microphone (I have this little switch on my microphone), the cpu usage will immediately drop down to zero. My problems are resolved!Hope this helps.

I found that if you are using microsoft plus all you have to do is go into add/remove programs and "CHANGE" microsoft plus. all you have to do is de-select speach recocnition and that should be it.
I hope you find this simple solution works.
For me this EVIL little program hasn't raised it's ugly head again.
Happy surfing.

I have had the same problem since I upgraded to winXP. I should have stayed with Win2000. I have gotten XP to crash eveyday with this speach recognition crap and I never got Win2000 to crash in 7 months. To resolve the problem I just uninstalled the speak part of Plus! for XP. I hope this advice helps people.

Hi, i got the sapisvr.exe problem in XP too. I fixed it by doing the following. I went to Regional and language options in control panel (make sure to switch to classic view) clicked on languages, details, highlighted speech reconition and removed it. I also have the XP Plus package on my system so i went to add remove programs, selected change, and removed voice recognition as one of the options. Haven't had a problem since. let me know if this helps.

This problem (computer with Win XP typing stuff by itself ) is nothing more than speech recognition software in XP running, and trying to type stuff as you speak on the phone or other noises in the room.

Turn the microphone off and it will not happen again.
