so... disable indexing and see if it stops?
or check your task scheduler in CP, check your startup apps also, or easier yet > open task manager and watch whats taking CPU cycles when the disk activity starts.

You didn't give many details about your computer, but I can say that the annoying idle hard drive activity on my computer went away after I abandoned my upgrade install, and went with a fresh install after reformatting to NTFS. Just my personal observation.

I had the same problems too. My HD would run excessively all the time.
The trick is to disble the indexing service used for searches. The problem is if you have loads of files (i have over 5,000 mp3s & over 20,000 other files on one of my HDs) and this was making the indexing service work all day & night when no one was on the computer.

Solution:

1) start a new search (anywhere)
2) select 'change preferences'
3) Select 'without indexing service'

Hope this works as it did for me
