Win XP can't see CD/DVD disks

Hi, I have a strange problem with WinXP.

If I boot the machine with CD/DVDs in my CD/DVD drives, the system recognizes the disks in the drives no problem and I can swap disks just like normal.

However, if I leave the drives empty (remove the disks) and reboot, and try to insert disks after the boot, XP will insist that I do not have a disk in the drive (both work this way).

The drives are on the secondary IDE (a TDK Velocd on Master, a Matshusita DVD on Slave).

Thanks!

Jim

Possible solution:

When u reboot - press ESC to enter setup (boot). Find the window/dialog where u can decide which boot order the disks have.

Normally CD/DVD have nr. 2. In your case CD/DVD prob. have order nr. 1. Change the values so that the MASTER have order nr.1.

Hope this is the solution to your problem.

Sinc.

First make sure you have the latest patch for your motherboard. If that doesn't work, try swapping master / slave jumpers. (Of course, you'll need to go into disk manager to re-letter your drives.) There are a select few optical drives in the world that prefer to be master or slave when there's another drive on the cable. They'll show up fine in the BIOS, but the little conflict they have with each other makes the OS mad.

One drawback - you may need to reinstall your DVD and CD-RW software if the swap works.

I have the same problem with a regular old CDROM. I hear the CD trying to spin and it stops then the message "Please insert disk into drive D". I reboot and everything is fine. I could put 20 more CDROM's and it can see it. I have XP Pro. My boot order is
1.Floppy 2.LS120 3.Hard Disk 4.CDROM
