I've found that WMP 6.4 was the best for adding divx codec (3.11 and 4.x) to allow for certain avi files to display correctly. Unfortunately, XP comes with a WMP 8.0 that doesn't always use the codex properly. While I'm pretty sure someone may know of a way to ensure WMP 8.0 will work with divx and certain avi files but personally, I've resorted to using Global Divx to play my non-working avi files.
