win xp and .xls files trouble

I have winxp pro in my pc in a l.a.n. with w2000 server. When i tried to open an excel document i receive the typical message :"this document is open by userxxx, you can only open it in read only mode".
And the file is not open!!!!!; after two or three times i can access to it. Any suggestion????
