I'm running Win XP Pro with P4 on ASUS Mobo. 512 RAM.
Recently my CPU usage shoots up to 100% and most programs won't load. If I wait 5-10 minutes after double clicking on something, it will open up.
I restored the system to a date when everything worked, but this didn't fix the problem.
I can't even shut the computer off correclty. It doesn't respond when I click Start-Turn computer off.
I did a complete virus scan and it shows nothing.
Anyone have an idea of what could be wrong?

What firewall have you installed? XP's firewall will not block or notify you of any outgoing program traffic. Have you checked for a possible trojan? If not try Agnitum's Tauscan, Trojan Remover, or TDS.

The service that takes all the CPU is just called Service.
My firewall is a hardware firewall that is part of a router. Also using Ontrack System Suite Netdefense Firewall.
I have not specifically checked for a trojan, just a virus scan. Where can I get the products mentioned by capt? Are they downloads from a website or software to be purchased?

Firewall and Trojan software tests/results/ratings are at http://www.pcflanl.com. and the download links can be founf there too.

I tried tauscan and it didn't find anything.
Does anyone else have an idea of what could be causing this. My computer is practically useless as every program takes 5 minutes to load. Some never load.
Please help.

Hi, I has this exact same problem, - you didnt mesntion it, but on my system i couldnt evan open up my computer. I tried everything, and was evan thinking about reformatting. The problem went away after like the 50th reboot, i think its something to do with if it has a bad reboot, windows seams to sit there paging files which is what is taking up recourses. I hope this helps.

Hi i have a similar problem after a restart all is ok but 10 to 15 mins later the cpu ussage is up to 100 %
i have tried nortons utillities, and spy bot but have not relly improved anything. i get the following message repeated in the windows help and support error log.
The Remote Access Connection Manager service terminated with the following error: The specified module could not be found. Would be interested to hear if you have found a solution for this problem yet

Hi i have just read on the MS help site about windows updates affecting TCIP drivers. So i uninstalled my network card and all its drivers and reinstalled thwhole loat again and it seems to have done the trick. fingers crossed, by the way dont forget to take a note of any settings in the tcip protocol boxes, best of luck
cheers!

I found a solution - sort of. I finally reinstalled win XP after trying all the suggestions above (and several others from other sources).
The 100% CPU problem seems to be fixed, but...
I can no longer access the system restore function, I get an error message that there is something wrong with a file winsna.dll
Also, Win XP's equivalent of dial up networking no longer works. I can't use any programs that need a modem.
I have decided to give up and reinstall everything from scratch. As soon as my new hard drive gets here, I'm going to reinstall Win XP and start all over. (Nothing wrong with the old drive, just time for a new one because I won't have anyplace to put my files if I erase the old drive)
