remove all the un-necessary hardware from your computer including all USB except for mouse and keyboard.
Remove the 500 gig and shut down the sata controllers from within the BIOS...remove all but one stick of memory and then try to reformat the drive and install the correct operating system. If it still doesn't work ...get and run memtest and replace/remove the bad memory modules.Definition of a Liberal:

This is most likely a hardware issue: an unrecoverable hardware error has occurred. The parameters have different meanings depending on what type of CPU you have but, while diagnostic, rarely lead to a clear solution. Most commonly it results from overheating, from failed hardware (RAM, CPU, hardware bus, power supply, etc.), or from pushing hardware beyond its capabilities (e.g., overclocking a CPU).
This fault is not easy to diagnose. Basically you need to try and identify the faulty hardware.
A few ideas to play with:
Check your drive boot options. You were using IDE before and then switched to SATA. Did you update your BOOT options in BIOS when you switched back and forth between SATA and PATA (IDE)?Try and get back to a known working configuration before trying your new hardware.
Check all your cables (Power, IDE and SATA) are fully inserted and the right way round. Check your memory modules and any other add-on cards are fully seated.Try using the absolute minimum set of components to get a basic set up working and work up from there to identify the faulty device (if there is one).
I know it does not explain much but here you will find an explanation of your fault:
