Can Windows XP be loaded over the top of WIN98SE? I would like to do this so that I don't loose everything I currently have loaded on my computer now. I also don't want to have to spend an entire day reloading all of the programs I currently have on this computer. It is a computer I use for my work. If this can be done, I would appreciate it if you would let me know how. Thanks!!!!
Tracy
P.S. How do you access the start-up utility in XP? I would like to remove some programs from start up that now automatically start when XP starts (this is on my home computer). I really like XP, that is why I want to switch to it at work also. Thanks again for your time!!!

Win 98SE can be upgraded to XP with a xp upgrade xd or a full xp install cd (i think) i recommend using XP professional..
if you upgrade so will you keep all your settings and programs and so on..but its not 100 % that everything will work.(i know this because ive upgraded myself before)
im sure someone can give you more details about this, heh.as for start up utility just press start - run and type in msconfig.
good luck with upgrading :)

As for your start-up question. When in XP, go to start menu and run. Type msconfig and run that. You will see some tabs of your windows configuration. One of them will be labeled startup. Go there and do as you please.
BTW, I dont know about Windows 98, but I ran the Full Install over ME and I had to reinstall my programs. Perhaps the upgrade would be the logical way to go since that is what you want to do, and it's cheaper.
Hope this helps.

Everytime I tried to "upgrade" any Win to another Win I had troubles and ended up buying a "full" version and starting from scratch.
Any instability in your old OS has a tendency to migrate to the new OS.
98SE, I have found is the most stable of the old Win's, and may work out OK.
Good luck,
The Old Tech.

and upgrade should work just fine there may be some apps you will need to uninstall and upgrade but its no big problem most of the time

Do yourself a giant favor-- DO NOT put XP on top of Win98SE. Sorry to be the dissenting opinion here but from all that I've read, it's just a bad, bad idea.
You'll also, as was pointed out, drag any problems, hidden or otherwise, into the setup.
The very best way to do this is to burn what you absolutely need to CD-R's & install XP new. That way you'll reap the reward of a new, fast operating system- clean & lean. It just seems kind of pointless to get the best op. sys. MS has come up with & then saddle it with 98. So what if you have to spend a little while reloading programs? They'll probably run better, too.
You'll never regret it-- and I'm pretty sure you'd regret doing the upgrade.
Good luck whichever,
T
P.S. You might want to invest in Drive Image. Once your new install & programs are in you could make a copy of your system & have that in the event you ever needed to install again in the future (saves the updating, program loading, etc...).

Ditto on the Drive Image, especially when u are doing a major change to your computer.
If you have Drive Image and make an image of your existing setup first (Win 98), then I would go ahead and try the Win XP UPGRADE first to see how well it works out. (It worked perfect for me - maybe I was just lucky.) If it doesn't then you can go back and do a full install, but u will lose everything and have to reinstall your programs. You do not have to buy the FULL version of XP to do this - the UPGRADE version will allow a FULL install if you have a previous qualifying OS, which you do in Win 98.
