Hi,
I installed Win XP Pro on Win 98 (Not using the upgrade function, because it always crashed >:( ). I have a Win NT server and a Unix server.
With Win 98, I saw the files on both of them just fine. Now, with Win XP, I can see and access the files on the NT Server, but when I access the Unix server, it shows no files at all (And yes they are there, I can check it with any other Win 98 computer).
What might be the cause of this, and how can I fix it (If it's possible)? Or is this a plan by Microsoft to kick Unix in it's ankle?

This is not a Microsoft plot against UNIX. May I ask what file system you are using on your XP rig? If it is NTFS, that is your problem. The only catch to NTFS for Windows 2000/XP/.NET is that it only works for these OS's. Users with Windows NT Server4 with service pack 4 can read and write to Win2k+ NTFS volumes, but they can't use the special attributes for the volumes if accessing them on the local computer. If you need to support multiple OS's on the same disk or on a network, you must use FAT 16, as the most widely supported file system. There are however, Windows 'tools' for UNIX that may help you with your network. I don't have any UNIX servers as of yet. So, i'm afraid i can't give you any solutions aside from FAT 16 file system. :o)

Justacardshot: Hmm, I'm using FAT32 on the XP's and 98's. Is that incompatible also? (At least it's different than FAT16 :P)
My Name: browsing with Samba, yes.

Looks like you need sfu(Services for Unix). Microsoft is selling 3.0 on there web site HERE. I don't have an XP box handy right now to see if 2.0 is included on the cd or current network stack. Check it out and let me know. I'm not very familar with Samba so you may want to try this question in the Linux forum.

My Name: Hmm, might try that. But hey, looky looky, it's a plan by Microsoft against Unix anyway - "You want to use Unix servers, well, buy some more software from us then" :D
