I found this link which walks you through how to install xp again WITHOUT formatting. Seems like it would work well just wondering if it will. Can someone advise?

"27. You now have the original WINDOWS directory intact on the hard drive which you can delete. Or you can leave it there temporarily until you are ready to delete it."

This is nothing new, it is just installing another copy of XP (different folder), a repair install is much appropriate for someone that wants to retain their data and settings intact.

This is known as XP parallel installation. Of course it doesn't format the HD.

From Microsoft:

A parallel install of Windows XP is always a good idea If you are unable to boot into your original install of XP. You can boot into a parallel install to get access to the original install. From the parallel install you can replace registry files, modify registry files, replace bad driver files and retreive data. (files)
A parallel install of XP should only be done to repair your original install or retreive data, It is not meant to replace your original installation

Agreed. I think one thing must be clear to all concerned: A parallel instal is not possible if your machine came preinstalled with XP. This procedure can be achieved only if you have native XP CD.

Also can this be done on a machine running x64 XP? For example install XP PRo in a paralell install and then nuke the x64 install?

I just want to start over from scratch.. with a parallel inst? A parallel inst will not be as clean as installing XP on a freshly-formatted HD. Read FJB comments again.

X64 XP is out of my league. Maybe someone will advise you.

Why do a parallel install out of the gate? First stop is recovery console, then a repair install, then a parallel install so you can get your data off and then a complete reinstall with drive format.

Here's a thought. Back up what you don't want to lose. Then do a clean install.

If you need to reinstall WindowsXP and want to keep all your current installed applications and settings:
1. Start WindowsXP
2. Go to the location of your source files
3. Run WINNT32 /unattend
For example, D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend ( copy & paste this command into the RUN box, then press ENTER ) Your computer will do the rest.
Or,
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
Copy & paste > D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend
Press Enter.
If you have i386 ( about 500mb ) on your hard drive, you can replace D: ( if D: is your cd drive ) with the location of it.

Hello everyone,

I agree with the other members.

If you do a parallel install you will not be able to access any programs you previously installed. All the settings you modified, along with any drivers you had to load will also be gone.

The new Windows directory, WINNET in the link, will have a new registry. The new registry will not have all of the necessary entries required to run any new programs you installed, nor will it have the entries necessary for new, or updated drivers.

I would go with Sabertooth and wanderer to try a Repair.

If no luck there backup the data if you can still access WinXp in Normal or Safe-Mode.

Can't do that, perform the parallel method, and as stated by the others backup your data.

Format the drive and do a clean install.

Best Regards,
Mesich
