Will More Memory Speed My CPU?

OS: Windows XP Home SP1
CPU/Ram: CPU = P4 1.8GHz, RAM = 25
Comment:

Hi everyone. I have a pentium 4 1.8GHz with 256MB Ram, and I was told that if I buy more memory, I could make my computer significently faster. Is this true? Would it be worth it? Is memory expensive?

Oh, and I have Windows XP Home SP1

Thanks in advance,
Mike.

512 Meg of RAM is really the least Xp should have, and yes, it will increase your system (not necessarily CPU) speed dramatically.

Depending on which type of memory your board takes, you are looking at between £20 and £40 for a 256 DIMM ($35 to $65 US).

your computer will be alot faster with more ram you can also speed it up by going to blackvipers website and making the changes he recomends there
ram is cheap
i have my paging file set to 0 and there is a significant increase in speed there but you need lots of ram to do it or you will run into problems

in a way, yes.
processor speed is the ability to process input information for a task(programme etc), whereas RAM is an amount of memory that is available to the system to hold running programmes at a certian point in time. the more RAM the more programmes can b running at one time. both RAM and processor compliment each other. upgrading RAM is definately worth it! much caheper and easier to upgrade than prpcessor, and the results and there to see.

hope this was of use.

More Memory = More Speed = TRUE !

But generally speaking, any work that requires lots of data to be stored (like Excel, Access, AutoCAD,...) will profit greatly from adding memory. 'Cause Computers are StUpIt !! They like using their memory better than using their CPU.

If you're a gamer, then a better graphics card (with more memory) is also an option.

I would suggest upgrading to 512Mb which is what I have, and the only time I really need more, is when I'm crunching numbers&objects
in AutoCAD or 3D Studio... (Also got an nVidia GeForce MX440 64Mb)
