Hi, my laptop has Intel graphic chipset, 14" widescreen. Since the lcd is not big, I'm wondering if resolution such as 800x480 can be set (not 800x600 because it is widescreen). With the correct dirver installed, XP doesn't give me such option. Is there any trick to do this or is it impossible? If this can't be happen on XP, will Vista make any different?
Thanks
Thomas

display properties > settings > advanced > monitor > list all modes ... see if you find 848x480
i have this option on my desktop pc with nvidia drivers installed ... and you wouldn't run vista on your laptop unless you get a huge memory upgrade :-)

Thanks for the quick response. Actually the 'list all modes..' is under Adapter tab, not Monitor tab. In Monitor tab, the only things that can be changed are refresh rate and monitor driver. The 'list all modes..' doesn't list such resolution, they are like 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x800 etc. 1280 make things too small on the screen while 800x600 doesn't fit the widescreen aspect ratio, picture and video doesn't look good. I'm not sure if it is limit by XP or the graphic driver or the graphic card itself, or is the lcd screen. If Vista can make this happen, I wouldn't mind to add some ram.
Thanks

LCD Resolution: When Bigger Is Actually Smaller
What this means is that the OS (XP and Vista) has no control over how the LCD pixels populate themselves.

Thanks, I understand the native resolution of lcd, my question is, how do I set it to a lower-than-native resolution that also maintain the aspect ratio? I google this and found some people are able to use something like 848x480 but I don't have such option in the display tab, so before I give up I just want to make sure it is the graphic chipset limitation (but I'm asking for lower not higher resolution), or if it is a software issue such as the driver or OS. If it is hardware, then definitly won't be any luck.

You could check for a later video card driver or try changing the video card.
Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

you sure it's the 'correct' driver ... originally distributed by gateway for this model?

Yes the driver is from the original CD from Gateway, I checked gateway web site, there isn't any newer driver for XP. In fact, I've another Dell laptop with the same problem. The driver does work properly, it give me all the high resoultions but I just want a low resolution with the proper aspect ratio so that things won't be too tiny on the screen. The lowest I can set right now is 800x600, but I hope something like 800x480 is available.
Thanks
Thomas
