why wont my flv files play on Windows XP

Specs: Windows XP
I downloaded files from YouTube to Final Media Player and watch just fine thru Media Space.
But when I download 'Final Media Player ' AND Media Space to my desktop in order to watch from there (since they are on flashdrive), I keep getting a message that I need AVC codec. Tried downloading several as well from net, but STILL need a AVC codec it says. Is there any way I can bypass that or what exactly is it wanting or what is missing. Windows Media player 10 (already on system) doesn't want to play those files either. Tried converting to MP4 but no go there too. Ughhh! Help!
